ディアドラ・マクロスキー（Deirdre McCloskey）の新作である『Bourgeois Equality：How ideas, not capital or institutions, enriched the world』をほぼほぼ読み終えたところだ。出版されるのは来月（2016年4月）。出版され次第、どこかしらに書評を寄せるつもりだ。本作は、『The Bourgeois Virtues』、『Bourgeois Dignity』に続く作品であり、マクロスキーが乗り出した一大プロジェクト――ブルジョア時代シリーズ――の最終巻にあたる（ 『Bourgeois Dignity』については、出版時にニュー・ステーツマン誌に書評を寄せた）。当初の計画では全6巻になる予定だったらしいが、全3巻というかたちで落ち着いたようだ。とは言え、三冊ともに600ページを超えていて、相当なボリュームであることに変わりはない。

ここでネタバレをするつもりはない。『Bourgeois Equality』に対する私なりの感想を吐露するのは後日にとっておくが、本書を読んでふと頭に浮かんだ疑問がある。資本主義の歴史なりダイナミズムなり――マクロスキーは「資本主義」という言葉が好きじゃないようだけれど――に切り込んでいる本シリーズを適切に評価するための準備として、他にどんな本を読んでおくべきだろうかというのがそれだ。私なりに真っ先に思い浮かぶ候補を以下に列挙するが、（資本主義の歴史なりダイナミズムなりという）扱われている問いの大きさゆえにいずれも大冊揃いだ。
