市場関係者 vs 経済学者

Orcam Financial Group, LLCのコリン・ロシュがポール・クルーグマンのIt’s back論文邦訳)に噛み付いた。よくある「モデルは実務を正しく反映していない!」批判だ。

量的緩和が高インフレをもたらすという論者(例えばアラン・メルツァー)が多いわけだが、それに対してクルーグマンはいつも自らの論文を使って反論している。

これに対してロシュはクルーグマンのモデルが想定している仕組みをこう批判する。

For the millionth time, that’s just not how banks work.  Banks don’t lend their reserves out so expanding the monetary base was NEVER going to result in consumers getting “the money for deposits”.

(百万回言ってきたことだが、これ(クルーグマンのモデルが想定する銀行の行動)は単に事実じゃない。銀行は準備預金を貸し出したりはしない。だからマネタリーベースの拡大が消費者の「預金を減らす」なんてことは絶対にない。)

これについてクルーグマンはブログで、

I’m actually kind of reluctant to even get into this, because any discussion of these issue brings out the people who believe that they have discovered the hidden secrets of the monetary universe, somehow missed by generations of economists.

(実のところ、この話をするのももうイヤなんだよね。だって、どんな議論をしたところで、こうした「何世代もの経済学者が見逃してきた隠された金融の秘密を発見した」って信じる人達を世に送り出すことになっちゃうからだ。)

とはいえ、

But here goes anyway.

(でも、やるよ。)

とゴングを鳴らし。Tobin-Brainardを持ちだして比較的詳細に説明している。要は経済学者は経済システムの本質的な動きに注目し、実務家は実際の手続きに注目することから来る行き違いに過ぎない、というわけだ。

anyone who thinks that there’s a big flaw in their reasoning is almost surely just getting caught up in his own word games.

(理論に大きな穴が有ると考えるものはほぼ全員、言葉遊びをしているだけに過ぎない。)
